Two Ottawa hourly bands, and who is on the job
HomeStars publishes two hourly figures that touch Ottawa. Its Ottawa electrician page says local electricians typically charge about $100–$160 an hour, and sometimes price per service. Its Canada-wide 2026 guide groups Ottawa with Edmonton and Winnipeg at $80–$130, and puts Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary at $100–$160.
The same guide splits rates by licence level, so the person on site moves the number:
| Who does the work | Typical hourly rate |
|---|---|
| Apprentice, under supervision | $60–$80 |
| Journeyperson | $80–$130 |
| Master electrician | $100–$160 |
In Ontario, the business you hire holds the ESA contractor licence, and its electricians work under it. Ask who will be on site and at what rate.
How an hour turns into a bill
The 2026 guide puts the first hour at $100–$200 on most calls, covering travel and the first assessment; regular hourly billing follows. Some companies add a flat trip fee of $75–$150, so ask whether it sits inside the first hour or on top of it.
After the call-out, the guide breaks the bill into parts:
- Labour, usually 60–80% of the total.
- Materials, marked up 15–25% over wholesale: often $20–$100 on a small job, $500–$3,000 or more on a panel upgrade or rewire.
- Access, $50–$200 extra when cable runs through finished drywall, tight crawlspaces or several storeys.
Jobs the price list leaves out
The price list above mixes the Ottawa page with Canada-wide guides. The 2026 guide adds a few jobs the Ottawa page skips: a ceiling fan where a light already hangs runs $200–$450, a breaker replacement $130–$250, a dedicated 240 V outlet $250–$800 and a Level 2 EV charger $800–$2,000. A whole-home rewire sits at $8,000–$20,000.
Per-light pricing adds up fast on a pot light layout, and a heater swap prices differently from a new circuit; see electric heating. Panel figures differ between the sources: $2,000–$4,800 on the Ottawa page, $1,500–$4,500 for a 200 A upgrade in the Canada-wide guide. The panel upgrade cost guide has its own breakdown. Knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring can add $50–$150 an hour.
The ESA fee on top of labour
Almost every electrical job in an Ontario home is reported to ESA through a notification, and the fee is paid when it is filed. ESA’s 2026 residential guide, in force from April 1, 2026, lists these contractor rates:
| Work on the notification | 2026 ESA fee |
|---|---|
| Minimum per notification | $92 |
| Renovation wiring, no service work, 1–10 outlets | $46 (minimum applies) |
| Same, 11–30 outlets | $92 |
| Same, 31–40 outlets | $143 |
| Same, 41 outlets or more | $201 |
| Renovation wiring with service work, 1–10 outlets | $105 |
| Service change, panel change or service repair | $86 (minimum applies) |
| Hard-wired hot tub or pool | $168 |
| Generator and transfer switch, inspected separately | $172 |
A notification stays valid for 12 months. If no inspection happens in that time, ESA returns the inspection fees minus a refund processing fee. The ESA permits guide covers the inspections themselves.
Hourly, flat price or after-hours
HomeStars’ Ottawa page notes that electricians bill by the hour or sometimes per service.
Timing moves the rate. The 2026 guide puts after-hours work at 1.5 to 2 times the regular rate, and some companies set a two-to-four-hour minimum on emergency calls, so a 30-minute fix can come to $300–$600. Grouping three small jobs into one weekday visit means paying the first hour once.
Reading a quote line by line
A quote you can compare shows labour hours and rate, materials with unit prices, the ESA fee and the scope; HomeStars warns against a lump sum with no breakdown. Ontario’s written agreement for contracts over $50 also carries the business’s contact details, any warranty on parts or labour, the total with taxes, dates and the payment schedule.
The province recommends deposits of no more than 10% of the project cost. When an estimate is part of the contract, the price can rise at most 10% above it unless you both sign a change. A contract signed at your home comes with a 10-day cooling-off period.
What to put in your request
List each job with a count: three outlets, one new circuit for a dryer, six pot lights in a finished ceiling. Add the house’s build year, whether the basement ceiling is open or finished, and a photo of the panel label.
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Electric Desk takes your request and passes it to one independent local electrical contracting company. That company calls you back, sets the price and does the work.
Questions people ask
What is the hourly rate for an electrician in Ottawa?
About $100–$160 an hour on HomeStars’ Ottawa page, and $80–$130 on its 2026 Canada guide for mid-size cities such as Ottawa. Ask which rate applies to your job.
Why was I billed a full hour for a 20-minute repair?
HomeStars says most pros bill the first hour of a call as one block of $100–$200, because it covers the drive and the first look at the problem. After that hour, time goes at the regular rate. Some companies add a separate trip fee, so ask how the first hour is charged before booking.
Is the ESA fee part of the electrician's price?
The company doing the work files the notification with ESA, and ESA fees are payable when it is submitted, so the fee should appear on your estimate. ESA lists an estimate with no ESA fees among the signs of an unlicensed contractor.
What is the ESA fee for a panel change?
On ESA’s 2026 residential guide, a service change, panel change or service repair is listed at $86, and the $92 minimum per notification applies when the total comes in lower. Renovation wiring done together with service work starts at $105 for up to 10 outlets.
Can I supply my own light fixtures to save money?
HomeStars notes that electricians mark up parts by 15–25%, and that buying fixtures or fans yourself removes that markup. Ask the company before you buy. ESA says a product needs a recognized approval mark, such as CSA or ULC, before it is installed in Ontario.
