Electrical work in Kanata
Give your postal code, what needs doing and the type of home: a detached house, a townhouse or a stacked unit. One independent electrical contracting company in the west end receives it and phones you.
In short
- 01Highway 417 links Kanata with downtown Ottawa, about 22 km to the east, across the Greenbelt.
- 02Kanata's first street, Tiffany Crescent, was built in 1964; Beaverbrook and Glen Cairn are its oldest neighbourhoods.
- 03A Level 2 home EV charger install runs $800–$2,000 (HomeStars, Canada-wide 2026 guide).
- 04In a stacked townhome condo, an EV charger goes through a written application; the corporation has 60 days to respond.

What to ask before you book
- Q1Is my address, north or south of Highway 417, inside your service area?
- Q2For a 1960s or 1970s Beaverbrook or Glen Cairn house, have you worked with aluminum branch wiring?
- Q3For a charger in a stacked townhome, will you prepare the drawings the condo board asks for?
- Q4Will you file the ESA notification, and is the fee in your price?
- Q5Will the written quote list parts, labour and HST separately?
Before the visit
- Postal code and the closest arterial: March, Terry Fox, Campeau, Hazeldean, Eagleson or Kanata Avenue
- Detached, freehold townhouse, stacked townhome or condo unit
- Neighbourhood or build year: Beaverbrook, Glen Cairn, Katimavik, Bridlewood, Kanata Lakes, Morgan's Grant
- For a home newer than two years: its possession date
- Photos of the panel and of the parking spot, for EV charger requests
Build year, street by street
Wikipedia calls modern Kanata largely the creation of planner and developer Bill Teron; heavy development began in the 1960s and the first street was built in 1964. Beaverbrook, west of March Road and north of Campeau Drive, is the first and oldest neighbourhood; Glen Cairn, south of Hazeldean Road, is one of the oldest too. Bridlewood came over from Nepean in 1978 and still has projects under way at its south end. The province incorporated Kanata as a city in 1978, and amalgamation folded it into Ottawa in 2001.
Houses from that first wave fall in ESA’s mid-1960s to late-1970s window for possible aluminum wiring. ESA calls it safe when connections are made properly with devices approved for aluminum. A Bridlewood or Kanata Lakes house is a different job from a Beaverbrook one. Put the neighbourhood or build year in the request.
Stacked townhomes and the charger question
Wikipedia describes the Town Centre area on the north side of Highway 417 as a large mix of townhomes and stacked townhomes. Where a home is part of a condominium corporation and the charger touches the common elements, the owner files a written application with the board. It has 60 days to reply, and an approval leads to an installation agreement within 90 days.
Start that application early and send the company the board’s reply. A freehold townhouse with its own panel and driveway skips this step; the usual ESA notification still applies.
Electrical faults in a house under two years old
Bridlewood still has building under way, so some Kanata owners are inside Tarion’s two-year window. For those two years from possession, the warranty covers electrical defects in work or materials, and the coverage carries over to a buyer. Send the builder a claim through Tarion’s process, and ask the electrician to write down what it found.
Distance from the core
From downtown it is roughly 22 km west on Highway 417, on the far side of the Greenbelt from Nepean. A postal code and the nearest arterial let the company plan the drive.
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Electric Desk is a request service. A single independent electrical contractor serving the west end gets your Kanata request; it phones you, quotes and does the work.
Questions
01I live in a stacked townhome near the Town Centre. Can I get an EV charger?
If the home is in a condominium corporation and the parking spot is a common element, or the install changes the common elements, you apply to the corporation in writing under s. 24.5 of O. Reg. 48/01, with drawings and specifications. The board must answer within 60 days.
02Does an older Beaverbrook house need rewiring?
ESA’s position is that each home is assessed on its own. Houses from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s may have aluminum wiring, which the Ontario Electrical Safety Code permits. Put the build year in the request so the company brings devices approved for aluminum.
03When is charging cheapest on Hydro Ottawa?
On Hydro Ottawa’s Ultra-Low Overnight plan, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. is the low-price window. Time-of-Use is lower on evenings, weekends and holidays. You can switch plans through MyAccount.
04My Kanata house was finished last year and an outlet failed. Who do I call?
For two years from possession, Tarion’s warranty covers defects in work or materials in the home’s electrical delivery and distribution systems. A fault in that period goes to the builder, through Tarion’s claims process.
