What to ask before you book
- Q1Do you work my part of Orléans, north or south of Innes Road?
- Q2For a house from the late 1960s or 1970s, do you work with aluminum wiring and the devices approved for it?
- Q3My bill is from Hydro One. Does that change anything for a service upgrade?
- Q4Will the pot lights or fixtures go on an ESA notification, and is the fee in your price?
- Q5Can I have the price, the parts and the HST in writing before you start?
Before the visit
- Street and nearest main road: St. Joseph Boulevard, Innes Road, Tenth Line, Trim Road, Jeanne d'Arc Boulevard
- Year the house was built, or the neighbourhood: Queenswood Heights, Convent Glen, Fallingbrook, Chapel Hill, Avalon
- The name of your electricity company, from your last bill
- For lighting work: the rooms, the number of fixtures and whether the ceiling is finished
- Any insurer letter about the wiring
Orléans by decade
Orléans was a rural farming community until the late 1960s. Queenswood Heights was one of the first large subdivisions; Convent Glen and Orléans Woods followed through the 1970s, after improvements to Highway 174 made the trip downtown easier. Chapel Hill and Fallingbrook came in the 1980s and 1990s, and today the community extends to the Innes Road area, including Avalon, Chapel Hill South and Bradley Estates. The population went from about 6,000 in 1971 to about 24,000 in 1981.
An electrician reads those dates. ESA says homes built from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s may have aluminum wiring. It is permitted under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and safe with proper connections and devices approved for aluminum. Write the build year or the neighbourhood in the request so the company brings the right devices.
Lighting jobs: what to count
For fixture swaps, ceiling fans or pot lights, count the fixtures, say which rooms, and note whether the ceiling is finished drywall or open. HomeStars’ 2026 guide puts a ceiling light on an existing box at $100–$300 and a fan at $200–$450. A light that needs a new run from the panel climbs to $300–$600 or more.
Pot lights go on an ESA notification like any other wiring job.
Hydro Ottawa or Hydro One
In December 2015, CBC reported that a deal to move about 45,000 Hydro One customers inside Ottawa to Hydro Ottawa had fallen through, and named Orléans among the outlying areas where many of them lived. That is a 2015 report; check the name on your current bill. The name on your bill matters for a service upgrade or a mast repair: the contractor’s request goes to that utility.
Getting an electrician out to Orléans

Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Electric Desk sends your Orléans request to one independent electrical contracting company that works the east end. That company calls you, prices the work and does it.
Questions
01My insurer asked about aluminum wiring. What should I send?
ESA says some insurers will not provide or renew coverage on homes without an ESA inspection, and may ask for repairs and a copy of the Certificate of Acceptance. Ask your insurer for its requirements in writing and attach them to the request. ESA recommends an electrical contracting company familiar with aluminum wiring for the assessment.
02Is my house on Hydro Ottawa or Hydro One?
Look at your electricity bill. CBC reported in December 2015 that about 45,000 customers inside the City of Ottawa were still served by Hydro One, many of them in outlying areas such as Orléans. That article is the newest source we found, so your bill settles it for your address. For a service upgrade, the request goes to the utility that serves you.
03Do pot lights in a finished basement need an ESA permit?
ESA says notifications are needed even for work as simple-looking as pot lights. The contracting company files it before the work starts and arranges the inspection.
04How far east do the visits go?
Each request goes to one company covering the east end. Orléans runs from Green’s Creek east toward rural Cumberland and Navan. A postal code in the request lets that company confirm right away that your street is in range.
