What to ask before you book
- Q1Do you cover my part of Barrhaven, east or west of Greenbank Road?
- Q2For a condo townhouse, do you need the property manager's sign-off before work on the outside wall?
- Q3If the fault is a builder defect, will you write what you found so I can send it to Tarion?
- Q4For a mast repair, will you file the ESA permit and arrange the Hydro Ottawa reconnection?
- Q5Can you put the price and the parts, with HST, in writing first?
Before the visit
- Postal code, plus the nearest of Strandherd, Greenbank, Woodroffe, Jockvale or Longfields
- Type of home: detached, freehold townhouse or condo townhouse
- Possession date and builder, if the house is under two years old
- Photos of the panel, and of the mast and meter outside if the problem is there
- Your insurer's claim number, for storm damage
New-build Barrhaven: the builder comes first
Barrhaven’s schools and parks were mainly built after 2000, and new communities such as Barrhaven Mews, between Strandherd Road and the Jock River, are still under construction.
Tarion’s two-year warranty covers defects in work or materials in the electrical delivery and distribution systems, from the date of possession, and it stays with the house if sold. For a dead circuit or a breaker that trips with nothing running, put the possession date and the builder in the request. If the fault is a builder defect, ask the company to write down what it found for your Tarion claim.
Townhouse rows
Most Barrhaven streets are lined with townhouses, with larger detached houses on some. Tell the company whether your townhouse is freehold or part of a condominium corporation. In a condo, the corporation controls the common elements and may have its own rules for contractors, so put the property manager’s contact in the request. For an EV charger in a condo spot, Ontario sets a written application process with a 60-day response; see the EV charger page.
The older streets and the late-1960s houses
Modern Barrhaven began in the 1960s, built by Mel Barr outside the Greenbelt. The first subdivision houses along Larkin Drive date from around the late 1960s and early 1970s, and expansion was approved in 1977. Those years sit inside ESA’s mid-1960s to late-1970s window for possible aluminum wiring, so the build year belongs in the request.
Storm damage at the mast
When a storm bends the mast or tears the service off the wall, the repair is split. Hydro Ottawa owns the wires from the pole; the homeowner owns the mast, the meter base and the wires to the panel. An electrical contracting company files for an ESA permit, repairs your side and passes inspection, and only then does Hydro Ottawa reconnect. A temporary repair approved by ESA has to be made permanent within 30 days. Call Hydro Ottawa at (613) 738-6418 first so it confirms which parts are yours.
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Electric Desk takes your request and hands it to one independent electrical contracting company that covers Barrhaven and the south end. That company makes the call, sets the price and carries out the work.
Questions
01My Barrhaven house is a year old and a circuit keeps failing. Builder or electrician?
Start with the builder. Tarion’s two-year warranty, counted from the possession date, includes defects in work or materials in the electrical delivery and distribution systems. File through Tarion’s process, keep copies, and call an electrician for anything unsafe in the meantime.
02A storm bent the mast on my house. Who fixes it?
With overhead service, Hydro Ottawa owns the wires from the pole; the homeowner owns the mast, the meter base and the wires to the panel. An electrical contracting company applies for the ESA permit, makes the repair and passes the inspection. Then Hydro Ottawa books the reconnection, and someone has to be home with the main breaker off.
03Does home insurance cover a damaged mast?
Hydro Ottawa says many home insurance policies cover mast repairs. Ask your insurer, keep every receipt, and ask the contractor for a copy of the ESA certificate for the claim.
04How far south do the visits go?
Barrhaven runs from the Greenbelt south past the Jock River to Half Moon Bay along Cambrian Road, between the Rideau River and Highway 416. The company that gets your request covers the south end; your postal code tells it if your street is inside its range.
